Description
Introducing the enchanting Maddenii Rhododendron, a compact and upright shrub that radiates beauty and resilience. With its waxy dark green leaves adorned with a beautiful red tinge, Maddenii is a sight to behold, reminiscent of the vibrant foliage of the viburnum bush.
Contrary to common perception, Maddenii is hardier than one might expect, thriving even in the frost-prone regions of the South Island. Its adaptability and resilience make it a popular choice among gardeners seeking to add a touch of elegance to their landscapes.
Maddenii’s charm extends beyond its foliage, as it bursts into bloom with intensely fragrant flowers in late November to early December, gracing the garden with its captivating scent. Sheltering the plant from frost ensures the protection of its delicate blossoms, allowing them to flourish and enchant all who encounter them.
With an ultimate height reaching 2.00 meters after 10 years of growth, Maddenii is not only a visual delight but also a practical choice for creating hedges or adding structure to garden borders. In Kirwee, Canterbury, gardeners have successfully utilised Maddenii as a hedge between cherry trees, showcasing its versatility and adaptability.
Whether grown in full light or partial shade, Maddenii responds well to shaping pruning, allowing gardeners to maintain its compact and upright form with ease. Embrace the beauty and resilience of Maddenii Rhododendron, and transform your garden into a haven of fragrant blooms and vibrant foliage.

How to plant
All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.
