At RhodoDirect, our West Melton nursery is open to the public, offering the chance to explore our beautiful display garden and shop a wide variety of rhododendrons and azaleas. For over 20 years, we’ve been proudly supplying gardeners across New Zealand with top-quality plants to brighten their gardens.

Wind Burn
The challenge this spring has been the extreme temperature swings — one day it’s 26°C and the next it’s down to 10°C. It’s been playing havoc with Mother Nature! The plants are just as confused as we are, not quite sure whether they should be growing, flowering, or resting.
And of course, the famous Canterbury nor’wester has come back with a vengeance. The dry winds have quickly sucked the moisture out of the soil, leaving cracks in the ground even after the wet winter we’ve had. That combination of heat, wind, and dryness is the perfect recipe for wind burn on new growth — something many gardeners are noticing at the moment.
Behind the Scenes
Despite a wild mix of snow, hail, and late frosts, our rhododendrons have proven just how tough they are — thriving through it all and shining at every event we’ve taken them to this season. From decorating the Courtenay A&P 150th Ball to brightening the Canterbury A&P Show and hosting the Veteran Vintage Car Club at the nursery, the past six weeks have been bursting with colour, community, and connection. We’re so grateful to share our blooms with so many wonderful people across Canterbury.
