Description
Rhododendron ‘Pines’ is an attractive New Zealand hybrid rhododendron registered with the New Zealand Rhododendron Association. It was raised by Mr E. Stead and G. F. Smith of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust and combines the traits of R. griersonianum with the vigorous hybrid ‘Ilam Alarm’, resulting in a plant with excellent garden performance and ornamental appeal.
This cultivar typically forms a medium to large evergreen shrub, reaching approximately 1.5–2 metres in height, with evergreen foliage that provides structure and interest throughout the year. Like many hybrids with griersonianum parentage, it is likely to produce light, expressive blooms and perform well in partial shade to woodland settings, where it can be admired alongside companion shrubs.
Rhododendron ‘Pines’ prefers well drained, acidic soil and benefits from sheltered positions that protect tender new growth and encourage flower production. Its balanced habit makes it suitable for feature plantings, mixed borders, or shelter belts in gardens that value evergreen foliage and seasonal bloom display.

How to plant
All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.
