Description

Rhododendron ‘Ilam Yellow’ is a highly regarded evergreen rhododendron hybrid from the renowned Ilam breeding programme, valued for its reliable performance and true yellow colouring. Growing to approximately 1.5 m in height, it forms a well-balanced shrub suitable for garden borders, woodland settings, and mixed shrub plantings where softer spring colour is desired.
In spring, ‘Ilam Yellow’ produces attractive trusses of yellow flowers, ranging from soft lemon tones to clearer yellow as the blooms mature. Yellow rhododendrons are especially effective for brightening shaded areas of the garden, and this variety pairs beautifully with whites, creams, and pastel pinks in spring displays.
The evergreen foliage provides year-round structure, while the plant performs best in acidic, well-drained soil with shelter from hot afternoon sun. Regular mulching helps retain moisture and promotes healthy root growth, supporting strong flowering year after year. As with most Ilam hybrids, ‘Ilam Yellow’ is well suited to New Zealand conditions when planted correctly.
Rhododendron ‘Ilam Yellow’ is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a reliable yellow-flowering rhododendron with manageable size and dependable spring colour.

How to plant

All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.

Care information

Rhododendrons are rewarding and easy to grow once their basics are right — most issues come down to watering, drainage, or planting depth. Follow our planting guide for a great start, prune as needed, mulch annually to keep roots cool, and feed lightly in spring for a spectacular bloom later in the year.

Keep an eye out for common issues like powdery mildew or thrip, and address them promptly. We have plenty of information on caring for your rhododendron, and if you can’t find what you need, we’re always happy to talk all things Rhodos. Find a full overview in our General Care Guide (link below).
