Description
Rhododendron ‘Hydon Velvet’ is a much-loved compact evergreen rhododendron prized as much for its foliage as for its spring flowers. Growing to approximately 1.2 m in height, it forms a tidy, well-balanced shrub that fits beautifully into smaller gardens, woodland borders, and mixed shrub plantings. The glossy dark green leaves are backed by a distinctive cinnamon-brown felted indumentum, giving this plant outstanding year-round visual appeal and making it a standout even when not in flower.
In spring, Hydon Velvet produces compact trusses of soft pale pink to white flowers, which sit neatly above the foliage and complement the rich leaf colouring rather than overpower it. This subtle flowering makes it an excellent choice for gardeners who appreciate refined colour and texture rather than bold displays. Like most rhododendrons, it thrives in well-drained, acidic soil, with protection from hot afternoon sun, and benefits from regular mulching to keep roots cool and moist.
Hydon Velvet is particularly effective when planted where the foliage can be appreciated up close — along paths, near seating areas, or as part of a layered woodland garden. Its compact habit and dependable performance make it a reliable choice for both experienced collectors and gardeners new to rhododendrons.
Order Rhododendron ‘Hydon Velvet’ online and enjoy year-round foliage interest in your garden. Or visit the RhodoDirect nursery to see the incredible indumentum up close and get expert advice on placement and care.

How to plant
All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.
