Description
Rhododendron ‘Constance’ (registered as Hachmann’s Constanze) is a robust and reliable hybrid bred by the renowned Hachmann’s Nursery in northern Germany, valued for both its toughness and elegant floral display. In New Zealand conditions, the flowers open a soft lilac pink, with paler shading in the throat and distinctive wine-red spotting on the upper lobe, creating subtle depth and interest within each truss.
Flowering in late October ‘Constance’ is a welcome addition to the garden as the seasons shift, providing colour when many other shrubs are finishing. The plant has a low, spreading habit, growing wider than it is tall, and forms a dense, well-shaped evergreen shrub. At maturity, it reaches approximately 140–160cm high after 10 years, making it well suited to woodland gardens, large borders, and informal hedging.
Exceptionally hardy and dependable, this rhododendron performs well in cool climates and is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a strong, easy-care plant with refined colouring. A beautiful option for adding structure, year-round foliage interest, and late-season flowering to the garden.
