Thor Rhododendron: A Stunning Scarlet Bloom for Your Garden
Thor Rhododendron is a spectacular choice for gardeners seeking vibrant color and lush foliage. This woodland hybrid produces long-lasting, bright red flowers in loose trusses, adding a striking focal point to any shaded garden. Its deep green leaves feature a thick, hairy underside, creating year-round interest and texture. Compact and widely branched, Thor is an excellent option for smaller gardens or woodland plantings where space is limited.
The flowers of Thor Rhododendron are a brilliant bright scarlet with a large calyx, broadly funnel-shaped. They are held in a lax truss of about seven flowers, making for an impressive floral display. Blooming midseason, November, this variety ensures a vibrant splash of red at the peak of the gardening season. While it does not have a fragrance, its ornamental value more than compensates for the lack of scent.
The foliage of Thor is equally noteworthy. The dark green leaves have a thick indumentum on the lower surface, providing a rich, textured appearance. Its compact, widely branched growth habit ensures a well-formed, bushy plant that remains attractive throughout the year. With a modest height of approximately 80cm in 10 years, it is a manageable choice for most gardens. This hardy variety withstands temperatures as low as -15°C, making it suitable for cooler climates.
Thriving in woodland conditions, Thor Rhododendron performs best in partial shade with protection from harsh winds. It prefers rich, well-draining soil with ample organic matter to support its growth. Regular mulching helps retain moisture and improves soil health. While it tolerates shade well, some indirect light enhances flowering, ensuring a spectacular seasonal display.
Thor Rhododendron is an exceptional choice for woodland gardens, providing vivid colour, compact growth, and excellent shade tolerance. Its striking red blooms contrast beautifully against deep green foliage, making it an eye-catching addition to shaded borders, woodland plantings, or mixed shrub beds. Hardy, low-maintenance, and visually stunning, Thor is a must-have for any gardener looking to brighten up shaded areas.

How to plant
All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.
