Description
Rhododendron ‘Gwilt King Red’ is a striking small-growing rhododendron prized for its intense red flowers and tidy, compact habit. Flowering in late October to November, it produces blood-red trusses that stand out vividly against the dark green foliage, making it an excellent choice for adding colour and structure to smaller gardens and borders.
This cultivar forms a neat, rounded mound, reaching approximately 0.8 metres in height at 10 years, providing year-round visual interest and a strong architectural presence in the garden. The dense foliage complements the vibrant flowers, creating a standout display during the spring flowering period.
‘Gwilt King Red’ thrives in free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter and benefits from regular mulching to maintain moisture. It is thrip resilient and sun tolerant, making it reliable for spring flowering even in exposed garden positions in New Zealand.

How to plant
All our rhododendrons are grown in pots, so you can plant them anytime, though autumn is ideal for encouraging strong root growth. Find the right spot based on your chosen rhodo, improve the soil generously with organic matter, gently tease out the roots, and plant shallow at or just below the original soil level. Finally, mulch well and water thoroughly to help your plant establish.
