July Growing Guide
What grows well with rhododendrons? Here’s what we plant!
We’re often asked what makes a good companion plant for rhododendrons — especially in winter when gardens can look a bit bare. Because rhodos have shallow roots, it’s important to choose plants that won’t compete too aggressively for nutrients or space.
Here are some of our favourite underplanting and companion picks: Hellebores – Winter-flowering beauties that add colour when little else is blooming
Hostas & Heucheras – Lush foliage that thrives in dappled shade
Hydrangeas & Dahlias – For a bold summer show
Lilies & Trilliums – Elegant structure and seasonal interest
Chatham Island lilies – A stunning native touch
These plants all love the mix of sun and shade that suits rhododendrons, and they help keep the garden looking layered and lush year-round.
July is a great time to plan (and even plant!) your combos — your future garden will thank you.
