Description
Rhododendron ‘Stonelaw’ is a rare and distinctive variety, proudly raised by the Dunedin Botanic Gardens. This upright yet slightly spreading evergreen shrub grows to around 2 metres, forming a handsome and tidy bush ideal for adding structure and interest to any rhododendron collection.
Its dark-green, bullate (textured) leaves are ovate in shape and feature rusty-brown scales on the undersides, giving the foliage a warm, earthy tone. Young stems and petioles are softly woolly, adding to the plant’s overall charm and character. Making it resilient to thrips.
The fragrant, widely funnel-shaped blooms are white flushed with rose pink, beautifully spotted with pink and greenish-yellow in the throat on the upper lobes. The combination of subtle pastel hues and gentle perfume creates a truly elegant display that draws the eye and delights the senses.
Although not readily available, this rhododendron is a collector’s treasure and a lovely choice for sheltered gardens or rhododendron enthusiasts seeking something unique.
For best results, plant in well-drained, acidic soil in dappled shade and protect from harsh frost and strong winds.
