November Growing Guide
Rhododendron Care Checklist
As spring turns to summer, November is a crucial time for keeping your rhododendrons healthy and blooming. Here’s what to focus on:
Water well
Keep soil evenly moist and water deeply before 10am to prevent fungal issues.
Deadhead faded flowers
Snip off spent blooms to redirect energy into new growth (a dab of vege oil helps with sticky fingers!).
Mulch time
Top up with bark or pine needles to keep roots cool and moisture in — but avoid piling mulch against stems.
Light fertilising
Apply one-third of your acid-loving fertiliser now (save the rest for March). Look for a slow-release formula with magnesium and iron.
Watch for pests & disease
Thrips, mildew, and fungus can creep in — try neem oil, Kumulus (1g/L), or a systemic spray if needed.
Time to plant
November’s ideal for new rhodos! Choose dappled shade, and prep the soil with bark and peat.
Stay on top of these now, and your rhododendrons will thank you all summer long.
